But while the deceptively photoreal work of folks like Duane Hanson or Ron Mueck are, in fact, just sculpture, Smith flips the illusion on its head. Though pieces feign digital rendering, each “pixel” is carved entirely from wood: a real, tangible thing. This process is an arduous one, sometimes taking months at a time.
